Which Canasta variant should you deal?

Match the game to the evening - here is a quick steer:

If you are brand new to Canasta

Begin with Classic Canasta or Two-Handed Canasta. Both teach the draw, meld and discard loop, reward that first natural canasta, and keep the rulebook short enough to learn in one game.

For a long, social night at the table

Hand and Foot and Pennies from Heaven use five decks and give every player a hand and a foot, so a single game can happily fill a whole evening with four players.

When you are craving depth

Reach for the South American variants: Samba adds same-suit sequences, and Bolivia layers in wild-card canastas and a high target that rewards careful, patient building.

If you want tournament-grade rules

Modern American Canasta brings special hands, a strict clean-canasta requirement to go out and sharper scoring, the closest thing here to a competitive, club-style game.

Classic

The cornerstone of the whole family: the two-deck partnership game that swept living rooms in the early 1950s, plus its nimble two-player cousin.

Hand & Foot

Big-deck, long-format canastas where each player holds a "hand" and a "foot". Built for a whole evening around the table with friends or family.

South American

The richer variants born in Brazil, Bolivia and Uruguay, where same-suit sequences and wild-card canastas raise both the scoring ceiling and the difficulty.

Modern

Contemporary, tournament-era rulesets with special hands, strict go-out requirements and sharper scoring for players who want a tougher test.

Canasta games FAQ

How many Canasta games can I play here?

Canasta.now brings together 11 free variants in one place: Classic and Two-Handed Canasta, the big-deck Hand and Foot and Pennies from Heaven, the South American set of Samba, Bolivia, Brazilian and Uruguay, and the modern American, Cuban and Italian rulesets. Every one runs in your browser with no download.

Which Canasta variant is best for beginners?

Start with Classic Canasta or Two-Handed Canasta. Both use the familiar draw, meld and discard rhythm, reward you for building your first canasta, and keep the rules simple enough to learn in a single sitting before you branch out to the tougher variants.

What is the difference between a natural and a mixed canasta?

A canasta is a meld of seven or more cards of the same rank. A natural (clean) canasta has no wild cards and scores 500 points, while a mixed (dirty) canasta includes one or more wilds and scores 300. Most variants ask for at least one completed canasta before your side can go out.

Are all the Canasta games free to play?

Yes. Every variant on Canasta.now is free in your browser with no download and no signup, and you also get a fresh daily deal, leaderboards ranked by score, and live online multiplayer against friends.
